Traditions and Economy

A great part of the hill area of the Reggello territory is characterised by welltended crops on terraced vineyards and olive groves, which have been present since the 14th c.

Olives, the fundamental crop in this zone, are a vital element in interpreting the territory, and the trees profoundly characterise the landscape. The soil of these places produces excellent wine and an oil that is renowned for its low acidity and distinctive organoleptic characteristics, which are due to the altitude of the olive groves (300 m) and to the unusual nature of the soil. It is rather unique in Tuscany because of its very low calcium content and high quartz content. The plants are mostly of the frantoio and leccino types, but morellino and pendolino are also present.

The “Extra-Virgin Olive Oil Festival” takes place in Reggello every year during the winter months of November and December. Numerous agricultural estates produce and sell directly the precious extravirgin olive oil of Reggello, a Tuscan IGP, which is a qualifi cation obtained thanks to a pressing carried out using both traditional and modern methods in the various olive presses of the territory.

Many estates realise niche products, such as the traditional and precious sulphur beans, Cecino Rosa of Reggello, and the characteristic processed pork meats.

The traditional and centuriesold artisan working of wood is typical of the locality of Tosi. The Exhibition of Furniture and Wood Crafts is held at Vallombrosa every year in July.

Many artisan businesses produce luxury leather goods, wrought iron, items for interior decorating, lamps, and stone manufactures. The fabric of the territory is dynamic with its 1098 businesses, prominent among which are successful industries operating in the pharmaceutical and food-production sectors.

The backbone of the commercial fabric lies in the numerous family-run businesses, flanked by several large sales structures and by high-fashion outlets. In the hamlet of Leccio there is a fashion centre: the outlet known as The Mall is a collection of shops with the most prestigious griffes.

Tourist reception offers a wide gamut of possibilities ranging from small B&Bs to numerous and well-equipped farm-holiday facilities and many hotel structures, which all make Reggello and the tourist localities of Saltino and Vallombrosa one of the main reception centres in the Province of Florence.
